Derek Smith, MSc
Derek Smith began playing piano since he was five but stopped in his early teens, only to pick up the piano again almost a decade later. Although he has pursued a career in chemistry at the University of British Columbia, he has always been able to find time for music.
Derek actively participates in various music festivals in the Lower Mainland, recently placing first in the adult division of the BC Conservatory of Music and Student Performers Guild Festivals.
His musical interests include Romantic and 20th century works, as well as a strong interest in performing repertoire written for one hand only. His favourite composers include Alkan, Busoni, Godowsky and Rachmaninov. Derek’s teachers have included Dr. Nikolai Maloff, Gaye Alcott, Tony Kastelic, and Dr. Corey Hamm.
